Financial leasing of aircraft and vessels under Turkish law: key considerations

12 May 2026Legal Update

Leasing high-value assets in Türkiye involves both the leasing law framework and asset-specific registration rules.

Financial leasing is widely used in Türkiye to finance aircraft, vessels and other high-value assets. These transactions combine the general leasing rules with the specific requirements that apply to each type of asset.

The legal framework

Financial leasing is governed mainly by the Law No. 6361 on Financial Leasing, Factoring and Financing Companies. Leasing agreements must be made in writing, and the roles of the parties, including whether the lessor is a Turkish leasing company or a foreign lessor, affect how a transaction is structured.

Aircraft

Aircraft operated in Türkiye are entered in the Turkish civil aircraft register, and lease arrangements need to be reflected correctly in the register. International instruments and the parties’ choice of law also play an important role in cross-border aircraft leasing.

Vessels

For vessels, registration in the national or international ship registry and the treatment of mortgages and other security interests need to be considered alongside the leasing agreement.

Practical points

  • Align the leasing agreement with registration requirements from the outset.
  • Agree on governing law and dispute resolution for cross-border transactions.
  • Plan for termination and repossession scenarios.
